Why are the only options Singularity or Human Extinction?

Por que no las dos?

There's no in-between on AI. Singularity or Mass extinction. UBI promises, "Industrial Revolution 2.0", acceleration to singularity, Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism, expectations of immortality or merging with tech on the left... and mass unemployment, starvation and resource usage, poisoning all the water, and human extinction when the AI realizes we're useless on the other.
Can't we have both? Can't we acknowledge the more likely outcome is simply a nice productivity boost once we acclimate to accessible automation and find better ways to integrate it into our systems? We're placing AI on this absurd pedestal equal to the 1950's "flying cars and floating cities" of the future.
We see a ton of massive AI projects online: Failed security on massive apps leaking everything, decompositions of video games into mix-and-match mods, cloning of major products and services, AI training on copyrighted material... But the vast majority of uses I see in real life are small, simple tasks: Outlining an email, planning a poster or slide deck, writing small blocks of code or BASH commands, making changes to a massive excel document, parsing massive documents.
We're likely to see boring, steady and consistent growth over a long period of time. Jobs will be automated out over decades, not months. People will learn how to use it and we'll find ways to better regulate and improve it. But the rapid growth folks are dreaming or dreading is likely just a sales pitch or doomer take.
